Flash fiction for Blogophilia 1.5

Mac looked around the yard He  shuffled his feet  and drummed his fingers on the front of his jean clad  leg.  The cigarette smoke from the other men wafted over to tickle his nose. He heard their boots scraping against the concrete.

Where is Ed? They had agreed to meet to discuss their arrangement.

 “Hey Mac.”

“There you are. We don’t have much time.”

The outdoor exercise area was the only place they could speak directly  since they lived at opposite ends of the building.

“Not to worry. If we think off center and always do whatever’s next, we should be okay. The biggest hurdle will be getting across the river or we could go the extra mile around it. But going across would be better.”

They each tried to picture what they could remember of the terrain outside the walls. It had been a long time. Mac stood,  hands dangling  in front of him, his thumbs playing hide and seek;  his calluses felt like sand paper.

Ed could taste his fear. Or  maybe it was just  the sting of  adrenalin that thinking about their  course of action produced.

They planned to break out of the prison in two days
