Yea! It’s Sunday and time for Six Sentence Sunday
Every week participants post six sentences from something they are writing – or have written. It’s a lot of fun and really a great way to meet new writers!
And I’ve met some terrific people. Thank you !
Be sure to check out the other great participants and thanks so much for stopping by.
After dinner to celebrate the new century in the boarding house.
After the meal a Whist game is organized.
Mr. Thomas sits diagonally across from Kathryn, on Mrs Hodgson’s team, while Kathryn and Muriel belonged to the opposing team.
Kathryn found it difficult to study Mr. Thomas from that angle.
At home there simply wasn’t time for such frivolities, and she had not played card games in years.
Kathryn knew enough not to comment on her cards but could never remember which ones had been thrown down; however, when she found the trump suit in her hand, she unconsciously raised her eyebrows just a wee bit.
This greatly amused Mr. Thomas.
Doesn’t sound like she can bluff. I’m the same way when playing cards. 🙂 Nice six!
No she can’t bluff or fib or be deceitful 😀
LOL, she definitely doesn’t have a poker face! fun 6 with a nice subtle touch of her awareness of him…
She wouldn’t dream of playing poker!
lol hope she wins the hand 🙂
No, she doesn’t win…
Revealing six….I love it when we learn something new about a character through action 🙂
What a great compliment – Thank you!
Nice snippet! 😀
thanks
She’d never make it in Vegas! LOL. Enjoyed the six.
Vegas! is not for proper young women…
I never had a poker face either. But I love the way you used the game to let us see their awareness of each other. Very sweet. Can’t wait for this story to be out.
Patience, my dear, patience
I love that she wants to study him, but isn’t positioned where she can do it unobtrusively. Plus, she has to concentrate on her cards. I also love that Mr. Thomas is just as aware of her. Great chemistry here! Oh, take a look and see if (maybe) it should be “belong” to opposing, since the beginning of the sentence is in present tense (Mr. Thomas sits). I’m no queen of grammar, believe me, so I could seriously be wrong on this one, LOL!!
thanks you are correct 😀
Nice six, Sue. Yeah, I suck at bluffing, too. Look forward to how she reacts to his laughter.
she doesn’t – she never finds out lol
She’ll have to work on her poker face, lol. Can’t wait to see how she reacts to his reaction.
she would laugh at herself if she knew
Ha! Seems Mr. Thomas is studying her as well. I love this flirtation you’ve started between them. 🙂
Hey – that’s what we do eh?
He’s watching her quite closely. I wonder how she hasn’t noticed? The equal interest is fun to read. I can’t wait for the first confrontation.
Patience my dear patience
The poor girl. She needs to cultivate her poker face. Shame she can’t watch him, but it seems he’s making up for that by observing her. Lovely six!
so true – thanks for stopping by
I loved playing whist when I was a kid. I feel sorry for her not being able to hold a straight face. Great six.
wow – you actually played the game? thanks for the visit
I love that they both seem so aware of one another! Can’t wait to see what happens. But I have one question… If she moves her eyebrows unconsciously, how does she know that’s what Mr Thomas finds amusing?
she doesn’t thanks for dropping in
Very fun! Playing cards — playing games is a marvelous way to peel back a layer of oneself. I love this setting!
You’re absolutely right!
LIke the character reveal here, but just as a small note, I found the shift from present tense in the first sentence and a half to past for the rest of it jarring.
yes you are correct – thank you
It sounds like more is in play than just cards, judging from the chemistry on both sides!
It does progress yes lol
Nice six. I wish I knew how to play Whist. It’s on my to learn list.
😀
Cards are “frivolous” pastimes in her world. One word tells so much about the character’s background and personality. Well done!
Thank you for “getting it” 😀
I have never played Whist.. I am about in the same boat she’s in where time for things like games is few and far between!
